Program Details

Since the mid-1990s the West began to take special interest in Islam and how it 'fits' into the life of the modern Muslim. And it is no surprise that Muslims are also studying the reality of Islam in an attempt to reconcile life in the modern world while still keeping their faith intact. This has resulted in two opposing sides with one maintaining that modernization should be sacrificed for the sake of religion and the other that religion should be sacrificed for the sake of modernization.

Al-Madina Institute presents a one day seminar with Dr. Mohamed Ghilan that will explore the impact of modernity on western Muslims. He will combine analysis with discussions of the most defining issues and changes at work among North American Muslims and how we can reconcile between modernity and religion in order to live authentically amidst the confusion.

Event Schedule

Session Time Session Title Speakers & Panelists
10:00am - 1:00pm Session 1: Foundations of Islamic Theology
The basis of Islamic belief lays in the declaration of La Ilaha Illa Allah, Muhammadun Rasul Allah. However, while all Muslims uphold this belief in the unity of God and the finality of His Revelation to the Beloved Muhammad ﷺ, most Muslims today find themselves at a loss when asked to intellectually explain this faith. Session 1 will be a study of Islamic creed and its rational justification.

2:00pm - 4:00pm Session 2: The Relationship between Science and Religion
Science is used today as an alternative to belief in God, and examples of conflict between science and religion are used to bolster this claim. As an extension to Session 1, discussion during Session 2 will focus on the topic of the Quran and science. How are Muslims to approach this subject and in the case of conflict, how do we handle it?

4:00pm - 4:30pm Break & Asr Prayer
4:30pm - 6:00pm Session 3: Putting It All Together
The Islamic tradition is rich with a highly sophisticated and intellectual history. But why is it all relegated to a dead past where attempts at reviving it seem to fall short? The final session addresses the current context and how it impacts the Muslim mind, leading many to doubt the religion and its relevance to the modern world.
